Jenette McCurdy’s mom, Debra McCurdy believed, “writers get fat”, so she forced her daughter to pick up acting. Known for her roles in Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” and “Sam & Cat”, the former American star came up with her new memoir, “I’m Glad My Mom Died”, opening about the abuse she underwent during her career, including the reason for her happiness after her mother passed away.
The Trauma Of A Mother’s Abuse…
In her memoir, “I’m Glad My Mom Died”, Nickelodeon’s Jennette McCurdy opened up about the reason why she was happy after her mom passed away. Despite attaining stardom from her acting, McCurdy always felt incomplete because she wanted to become a writer.
Jennette’s first book, which was published on Aug 9, 2022, depicts her complicated relationship with her abusive mother up until her death from cancer in 2013. “She turned to me when I was 6 and said that she wanted me to be an actress because her parents would never let her be one,” McCurdy stated. “I mean it quite literally. I am glad that she died.”
During a recent CitySpace event, McCurdy shared with the host, Robin Young, I felt like, “Oh, nobody else in my family can read Mom the same way. I can see when she’s about to blow. I felt like it was my job to keep her emotionally regulated.” She revealed that her mother forced her into childhood acting and controlled her entire teenage years.
From isolating her, planning her entire acting schedule, to deciding her audition dresses, her mother was “abusive and dysfunctional”. Not only this but when the “Sam & Cat” star got older, her mother feater that she would lose child roles. For this, she taught McCurdy a destructive way to keep her body small: calorie restriction.
As a result, she has full-blown bulimia that McCurdy battled throughout her teenage years. She details it in the book, sparing no graphic detail. Jennette said her mother Debra McCurdy, who died of cancer in 2013, was present for instances like this but never bothered to intervene because she thought it was a part of being an actress.
McCurdy previously opened up that she was emotionally and sexually abused by her mother. In an interview, she revealed how her mother’s erratic emotions were like walking a tightrope each day. She pushed McCurdy into acting when she was just 6 years old to both financially support her family and she herself wanted to become a performer.
Another Revelation About Nickelodeon…
In Jennette’s book, “I’m Glad My Mom Died”, the author has opened up her heart to the readers. During a previous interview with the Washington Post on the publication of her book, Jennette McCurdy revealed that Nickelodeon offered her $300,000 in “hush money” to keep quiet about publically speaking about her experience with the channel.
The 30-year-old former actress opened up about her time working as a teen on the set, and how she was “photographed in a bikini at a wardrobe fitting and being encouraged to drink alcohol by an intimidating figure she simply calls the Creator.”
Among many other damning and heartbreaking revelations about what went behind the scenes, she opened up through her new memoir about how the company offered her $300,000 in “hush money” to stay quiet about her abuse under “The Creator”.
McCurdy also recalled The Creator getting “in trouble from the network for accusations of his emotional abuse.” She writes: “I feel like it’s been a long-time coming, and should have happened a lot sooner.” She revealed that he was disciplined to the point where he was “no longer allowed to be on the set with any actors.”
