Character.AI has risen to fame quickly since its launch in September last year. The AI tool, which lets you create characters of your choice that are authentic to humans and chat with them, is now used by millions of users worldwide for entertainment purposes.
For the last few hours, multiple users around the world have reported that the website is down and is showing an error message. So why is there an issue on Character.AI, and how to fix it? Read on to find out.
Why is Character.AI Down?
Currently, when someone is trying to log into the Character.AI website, it shows the message, “Due to continually increasing usage, our services recently became unstable, and we decided to put the site into maintenance mode while we scale services further.”
“We’re very sorry for the inconvenience to all our passionate users. Rest assured the entire team is working hard to fully restore service as soon as possible,” the message further says. Character.AI, developed by Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas, has taken the internet by storm and is growing in popularity each day.
With the huge increase in traffic, the platform’s servers have become overloaded, which now need to be updated by the developers. That is why the error message has been put up on the website, and the services have been paused to buy time for the expansion in servers.
How to Fix the Character.AI Down Issue?
Since the issue is from the platform’s backend, there is not much you can do to fix it. Character.AI has not yet addressed the problem on social media and has not revealed by when the service will be restored to its full capacity, so we will have to wait for the servers to be up and running again.
Meanwhile, what you can do is keep refreshing the page to see if the service is back. You can also try using the platform in incognito mode and clear the website cookies and caches. Some users have also attempted to use a VPN service to access the website from a different location.
Character.AI previously went down in December last year as well. At the time, it also went through maintenance problems due to increased traffic. However, it was back to smooth functioning just a few hours later. Hopefully, the service will return quickly this time as well.

Many users have expressed their fury over the platform’s prolonged maintenance issue. A user tweeted, “@character_ai IM STARTING TO GET IMPATIENT,” while another wrote, “Character AI, fix your server. Now. NOW.”
A user also joked, “Please character ai it’s almost 4 am I do not want to be alone with my thoughts please come back,” and one tweeted, “I’ve been reloading the website over and over again. Can’t believe it’s taking them so long to solve the problem. Listen to your fans character.ai! Give us the characters back.”
