The 2023 Met Gala event, which took place on Monday (May 1, 2023) in New York City, was dedicated to honoring Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy, the fashion visionary, who died in 2019. The invitation-only event to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
The biggest night of the year offered a choice to attendees to have a wide range of their choices considering the late designer’s decades-old legacy. While stars like Billie Eilish and Alton Mason lived up to the Chanel standards, some indeed left everyone disappointed. Here are the 10 worst-dressed celebrities from the 2023 Met Gala.
1 Ben Platt
The Politician actor, Ben Platt may have mistaken the late designer Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy as the one remembered for marching band uniforms. There is a difficult explanation as to why the Golden Globe Award nominee appeared in a shimmery band-like uniform, which of course had a Chanel tag, but didn’t really relate to Lagerfeld’s legacy.
2 Doja Cat
Grammy Award-winning rapper, Doja Cat may have taken her stage name and Karl Lagerfeld’s pampered cat, Choupette, a bit too seriously. Even though she deserves credit for the amount of dedication she put into transforming into a cat, from adding face prosthetics to that shimmery Catwoman attire, the look does give nightmares.
While Karl Lagerfeld’s cat was an adorable little, kind, and good-looking creature, Doja’s attempt to get those feline features didn’t hit the right notes, leaving her looking like half monkey-half cat. Hard to describe, eh?
3 Olivia Wilde
Olivia Wilde could have just organized a Halloween party and stayed away from the 2023 Met Gala. The American actress and filmmaker, despite her gorgeous looks, couldn’t live up to the Karl Lagerfeld spirit as she appeared in a bizarre cape dress. While there were some elements of Lagerfeld’s 70s designs, the gown was a big no for this year’s Met Gala. Feels like her breakup with Harry Styles isn’t letting her come out of the zombie zone.
3 Rami Malek
Before one starts with Rami Malek’s 2023 Met Gala look, the weird choice has nothing to do with his capabilities as a talented star. The actor, who brought Freddie Mercury back with Bohemian Rhapsody, did fail miserably in a choice to pick up the right designer for this year’s theme.
Dressed like a chef at the 2023 Met Gala, he might have not given those Karl Lagerfeld vibes, but he certainly got everyone hungry before dinner time. Well, forget doing justice to Lagerfeld, the actor must do what he does best, and focus on his upcoming series on silent film star, Buster Keaton.
4 Kate Moss
While everyone had high hopes for Kate Moss, who is known for her bang-on Met Gala looks, the actress didn’t really deliver the Karl Lagerfeld spirit. Moss appeared on the red carpet, dressed in Kim Jones’ Fendi gown alongside her daughter, Lila Moss, who also wore another Fendi couture gown by the talented designer.
But again, even though there was a mother-daughter spirit at its best, Karl Lagerfeld was rather missing except for the brand. Well, the Mosses did deliver everything on paper, but again, when it comes to Kate Moss, one always has high expectations from the lady who dares to dress bold.
5 Emma Chamberlain
Emma Chamberlain appeared as Daphne from “Scooby Doo” as a part of Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Spring 1995 collection, but couldn’t make a positive impact at the 2023 Met Gala. Even though her daring leg slit was noteworthy, the actress’ get-up did give some creepy vibes. Maybe, the designer was hungover while recreating the look.
6 Emma Wall
Jeremy Strong’s wife must take home a hard lesson from the 2023 Met Gala. She shouldn’t ever dress again in that dress. It is only fair to say that her golden met Gala look made her look untidy. Her floor-length gown did need some ironing despite that paper-like look. First, Karl Lagerfeld couldn’t be found anywhere in Emma Wall’s dress, and then the oatmeal-colored design made her look like she got out of the flu.
7 Jenna Ortega
Jenna Ortega may have forgotten about Karl Lagerfeld amid her obsession with Wednesday’s character. The young actress looked like a ghost in her usual black ruffle gown, and it feels like it was an extra pair from her Netflix show.
8. Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner ensured that she doesn’t leave her sister, Kendall Jenner alone on the list of worst-dressed celebs for the 2023 Met Gala. While the latter doesn’t deserve to be mentioned separately, it’s Kylie who disgraced Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy.
What appeared like a silk pajama, turned out to be more of a Jessica Rabbit-theme dress, which had nothing to do with this year’s Met Gala theme. The only thing worth noticing about Jenner was her stilettoes.

While Roger Federer didn’t really live up to the spirit of Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy, it is understandable that the tennis legend has better things to do on the field. But then, what one cannot understand is why Mirka Federer was giving gift-wrapped yeti vibes.

Ashley Graham teamed up with British designer Harris Reed for a tiered ball gown inspired by ’80s Chanel Haute Couture for the 2023 Met Gala. But again, she may have gotten the pink and black thing right, it looked more like a gross wedding tent.
