Before we skip to what’s on the cards for Met Gala this year, here’s an insight into this event and what happens during Met Gala.
What is Met Gala?
The Met Gala, also known as Met Ball, Costume Institute Gala, or the Costume Institute Benefit, is globally known as the ‘Fashion Biggest Night’ and ‘Celebrities Biggest Night’. A high-profile event, this one is also a fundraising gala carried out for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.
This gala is organized by Vogue haute couture magazine, marking the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Met Gala is a high-profile event. Each year, celebrities, business tycoons, and other big shots mark their presence at this function, following the theme of the year and curating their own fashion, becoming a part of the talk of the town.
The Oscars of Fashion
Met Gala is often considered the Oscars of Fashion. Every year, the event draws in the biggest A-list names that sport the most bespoke creations from the most impactful fashion designers in the world. Well-known names such as Alexander McQueen, Rei Kawakubo, Gucci, Chanel, Chopard, and so on help these celebrities wear their best outfits and slay the red carpet posing in their favorite poses.
Met Gala tends to raise millions for the Costume Institute at the Met, which holds an annual accompanying exhibition through the tickets, bought by the brands and designers. The tickets are expensive, costing around $35,000 each, and the tables are extravagant, ranging from $200,000 to $300,000.
All the Eyes on the Met Gala 2022
This year, the Met Gala will take place on the 2nd of May, Monday, in New York. This time, the event will celebrate the second volume of the two-part Costume Institute Exhibition. The first part, In America – A Lexicon of Fashion, opened on the 18th of September. Interestingly, it was preceded by the 2021 Met Gala that happened on the 13th of September same year.
What is the Met Gala 2022 Theme?
Many speculations have been made about what theme this year’s Met Gala will follow and how you will spot your favorite celebrities in them.
Part two of the event will have a theme called In America – An Anthology of Fashion. It is stated that the exhibition will see Andrew Bolton, the head curator of the Museum of Modern Art’s Costume Institute, focusing on inclusivity in fashion.
“Who gets to be an American?” was the question posed at Prabal Gurung’s spring/summer 2020 show. It will be addressed at the upcoming event this May.
To talk more about the Met Gala theme this year, this second exhibition was presented across 13 of the American period rooms at the Met. It provides a historical context for Lexicon, in a way, as quoted by the curator, Bolton. He says, “The stories really reflect the evolution of American style, but they also explore the work of individual tailors, dressmakers, and designers”. He was also found saying that some names in this year’s event will be very familiar to the students of fashion, such as Charles James, Halston, and Oscar de la Renta. The other names that have been overlooked, forgotten, or relegated into the footnotes of fashion history, too, will find their spot. The prime intention of this exhibition will be to spotlight the talents and contributions made by these individuals. Interestingly, many of them are women.
Every year, the theme of this grand Met event reflects in the dress code on the night, summarised on the coveted invitations as gilded glamor and white tie. This year, you may expect gowns worthy of sweeping period epics such as the Age of Innocence or a scene from the Gilded Age. It is expected that all your favorite celebrities will do justice to embody the grandeur of New York in the late 19th century.
The fashion experts have also speculated about the growing use of jewel tones, over-the-top textures, and at least one bustle.
Who Will Host the Met Gala 2022?
This announcement has been made in March. Vogue, on the 17th of March, released a statement saying that the hosts of Met Gala 2022 will be Regina King, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
They will serve as the night’s official co-chairs. The event will have honorary co-chairs, too, named by Vogue. According to them, designer Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour will do the honors of co-chairs of this gala.
Met Gala 2021 – A Small Insight
In 2020, Met Gala was canceled because of the pandemic, which left many fans and designers down. After this, the Costume Institute announced a two-part version of the event for 2021 and 2022.
As talked about already, the first exhibition, with a theme of In America, A Lexicon of Fashion, opened on the 18th of September. The 2021 event, the Met Gala itself, was co-chaired by Timothee Chalamet, Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish, and Naomi Osaka.
The theme of this event was all about celebrating American designers and cultural, political, and social events that occurred during the pandemic. The curator in charge of this event stated that the theme was based on the idea that the American fashion community has been supporting them for 75 years, really since the beginning of the Costume Institute. Thus, they decided on a theme that acknowledged its support and celebrated American fashion.
