History of Coffee
Although there are other stories related to the origin of coffee according to one legend it was discovered by Sheikh Omar in the 15th century AD. Details pertaining to the usage and drinking of coffee are mentioned in the account of Ahmed al-Ghaffar of Yemen. As Sufis had to perform religious rituals at night they used to drink coffee so that they can stay awake.
European coffee house was first opened in the city of Rome in 1645. The Dutch East India Company was the first company that started the import of coffee on a larger scale. As more and more people started drinking coffee it became an important crop that generated huge cash for many developing countries.
Coffee was one of the primary goods for export and source of revenue for few African countries like Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. There were many Central American countries as well which exported coffee all across the world.

The way traditional Finns brew coffee is a slight variation on Turkish coffee where coffee grounds and water are brought just barely to a boil multiple times.
- Norway ranks second with an average consumption of 9.9 kg per capita per year. Coffee first gained popularity in Norway among the wealthy in the early 18th century.
- Iceland with a per capita consumption of 9 kg is the third most coffee-consuming country. Well, this is quite obvious as cold climates and a cup of hot coffee usually go hand in hand!
- There is a tradition to serve coffee at each meal in Denmark and on special occasions, coffee is the center of attraction which is served along with cookies and cakes.
- Coffee culture is very strong and rich in the Netherlands which ranks fifth on our list. The Dutch drink 2.4 cups on an average per day.
- Canada ranks last in our list with an average consumption of 6.2 kg per capita per year and it is the only non-European country that made its entry into the list of the top coffee-consuming countries in the world.
