Stars too have fans, and Lizzo was all about Beyonce as brought a genuine sense of fun to James Corden’s “Late Late Show”. She hopped into the passenger seat with James Corden for a Carpool Karaoke segment and revealed that she would listen to Beyonce as a child and that listening to those songs gave her confidence. She even credited Beyonce for overcoming depression.
Lizzo said, “When I was shy, or I didn’t think I was cool or I was getting picked on, I would listen to Beyonce in my bedroom and it would transport me. I would feel something, I would feel like my life is gonna be better, you know? There’s hope for me.”
The About Damn Time singer also said that she would listen to Beyonce’s B-day on repeat after she dropped out of college and was looking for inspiration. Lizzo even called Beyonce her North Star as she said:
“When I dropped out of college and I was really depressed I listened to B’Day on repeat and I would just sing B’Day all the time. I was like, ‘I’m gonna be a singer. I’m gonna be a singer. The way she makes people feel is the way I want to make people feel with music.’ She’s been my North Star.”
After knowing Lizzo’s feelings for Beyonce, Corden then couldn’t help but play a cruel prank on Lizzo. When Lizzo said she’d never met Beyonce, Corden teased her that he was going to call up the “Break My Soul” singer.
Well, Lizzo’s hopes certainly got up, but then, James admitted, laughing “I’m joking, there’s no way I’ve got [Beyoncé’s] phone number.” Despite not being able to include the songstress in their sing-along, the pair did jam out to one of her early hits: “Crazy in Love.”
Some Jamming and A Lot About Childhood…
Lizzo may be a huge Beyonce fan but she did bring life to James Cordon’s “Late Late Show”. The talented 34-year-old rapper and singer, played the flute when Cordon handed out one to her, mid-drive. Not just this, during the Karaoke session, the duo sang her hit songs like “Good as Hell” and Juice”.
Apart from her love for Beyonce, she also spoke about various topics including how she got her nickname “Lizzo” and where her love for playing the flute came from. Regarding her childhood, she said that it was strict with the kind of music she listened to:
“For the first 10 years of my life, when we lived in Detroit, I was in The Church of God in Christ. When you have that faith, it is strict with the kind of music you listen to. We didn’t listen to secular music, it was devil music.”
Corden asked her a religious question if she would be allowed to listen to her kind of music now if she were at church. Lizzo burst out into laughter and stated that she would’ve been allowed to listen to her early music but not the kind after she started cussing in her songs. When Corder asked Lizzo if it was because of the cussing in the music, she said: “I don’t know, it’s just that. It might be the a**, and the nudity, a little bit.”
Lizzo revealed how her cousin would all up to her mother and complain about her inappropriate dressing. She stated that he would complain that she wasn’t wearing enough clothes on her Instagram posts. Lizzo revealed how she would double down and post more nudes the next day.
Lizzo Was Body-Shamed…
Throughout her career, Lizzo has been subject to body shaming. However, she is considered as an image of body positivity and self-confidence after her success. She partially credits social media for changing the narrative around the size of women. If you don’t remember, in 2019 Lizzo sparked controversy as she danced and twerked on her song “Juice” at a Los Angeles Lakers game while wearing a dress that revealed her thong.
In 2020, Lizzo stopped using Twitter as she cited that she became a victim of “too many trolls” and stated she would be back when she feels comfortable. Her Twitter account has since been updated by her management, while she remains active on her Instagram. Lizzo gives a lot of emphasis on mental health as she has struggled with depression.
If you’re not aware, Lizzo was recently slammed for using an ableist slur in her new single “Grrls”. The single features a slur derived from “spastic” — a word used to describe someone born with a disability that makes it difficult for them to control their muscles.
As for Beyonce, I can only say that who doesn’t love the “Queen Bey”. Interestingly, both Lizzo and Beyoncé have new albums coming out in July: the former’s, “Special,” is due out July 15, while the latter’s, named “Renaissance,” is coming July 29. What do you think about Beyonce? Has she been your inspiration too?
