John Mulaney and Anna Marie Tendler were one of the cutest couples of Hollywood but maybe they were meant to fall in love but not meant to last forever. The two of them called it quits after 6 years of marriage.
The former couple tied the knot in July of 2014 in upstate New York. Their wedding ceremony was attended by many of Mulaney’s former Saturday Night Live coworkers. Read on to learn everything about their romance and everything in between.
How did Anna meet John?
Tendler and Mulaney first met each other in the late 2000s. These two sparked romance rumors in the year 2010 and they ended up getting married after a total of four years in 2014.
At that time, John spilled the beans on the pair’s wedding nuptials on the social media platform Instagram. He gushed over his then-wife Anna in the Instagram caption of the post.
John wrote, “On a beautiful and perfect day, I married a beautiful and perfect woman. I wish I could live it over and over again.”

The late 2000s
The comedian John Mulaney first met artist Anna Marie Tendler in the late 2000s during a trip to Martha’s Vineyard, an island in Massachusetts. After many years, the couple explained their first meeting in a post on their wedding website, “After a group vacation to Martha’s Vineyard, John rode shotgun while Anna drove a carload of people home.”
The post further read, “He did bits the whole ride and killed. They were not dating at the time, but Anna knew they would be soon after.”
February 2010
The two of them sparked dating rumors in February of the same year. Many years later, Mulaney shared a picture of the sweet note given to him by Tendler on the occasion of their fourth anniversary on the social networking service Instagram.
The note read, “John is the man I’m going to marry,” and it also had a date on it. The date was February 16, 2010. She also signed the note. He simply captioned the post, “Happy 4th Anniversary @amtendler. And happy 8 year and 5 month anniversary to when you predicted it.”
January 2012
During an interaction with New York Magazine’s Intelligencer, John talked about his personal life which was a very rare sight for all his fans as well as he kept his private life away from the limelight. He jokingly explained the perks of dating a talented makeup artist and hairstylist.
Mulaney told the magazine, “My girlfriend is a makeup artist and hairstylist, and cuts my hair for free. I would promote her here but I totally forgot her name.”
During the same year, the comedian mentioned Anna in one of his comedy specials. In his stand-up special “New In Town,” John said, “I really like dating Jewish women,” while referring to his girlfriend.
The 39-year-old further added, “They’re great, because like I think a lot of problems people have in relationships are with communication because guys don’t know what women are thinking. And with Jewish women, you do not have to guess what they are thinking … they will tell you.”
December 2013
John and Anna added another member to their family in December. They adopted a French Bulldog and named her Petunia. They even started an Instagram account for their fur baby. In the same year, Mulaney popped the question to his ladylove. He proposed to Anna on a beach in Malibu.
The Saturday Night Live comedian recalled the build-up moment and said, “It was really funny, it was so tense. And then when I proposed, it was really worth it, so all of it was great.”
While making an appearance on The Ellen Show in 2014, he gushed over their bulldog and said, “That’s my wife and my daughter … it’s fun to have a French-Bulldog puppy. It’s like having a baby that’s also a grandma.”
July 2014
John and Anna said their vows in July of 2014 in New York. They got married on July 5, 2014, at the Onteora Mountain House in Boiceville, New York. The pair’s close friend and comedian Dan Levy officiated their wedding ceremony.
Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, and Nick Kroll were among those in attendance. The wedding of the two of them had a 1920s and woodland-deco theme. John posted a stunning picture of himself and his wife on Instagram to mark the special occasion.
November 2015
During his Netflix special The Comeback Kid, John talked about his now ex-wife Anna and their wedding ceremony. He said, “I love saying ‘my wife.’ ‘That’s my wife.’ It’s great, you sound like a person. I said it even before we were married.”
Mulaney further added, “Being married is so nice. I never knew relationships were supposed to make you feel better about yourself. That’s not really a joke, that’s just a little sweet thing I like to say.”
In the same show, he continued, “My wife is Jewish, she’s a New-York Jew. I did it! Now, I was raised Catholic. I don’t know if you can tell that from the everything about me. My wife is Jewish, I grew up Catholic, so we got married by a friend. Being married by a friend is a beautiful ceremony that alienates both families’ religions while confusing the elderly people at the wedding.”
2016
In 2016, Anne was John’s makeup artist for his Broadway show. For those of you who are unaware, let us tell you then Mulaney and comedian Nick Kroll took to Broadway for their hit show, Oh, Hello. In the show, the duo played the roles of two elderly men, Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland, and Anna Marie helped transform them into these characters.
During a 2019 interview with Nylon Magazine, Anna talked about the whole experience and said, “It was hands-down the most rewarding thing that I did in makeup in my entire makeup career.”
Tendler continued, “We did 140 shows just on Broadway, that doesn’t include the tour and off-Broadway. I went from writing books, which was very solitary, to working on Broadway on something really collaborative and that was so fun.” The show concluded in 2017.
May 2018
Throughout his fourth standup tour, Kid Gorgeous, John disclosed that he asked Anna if he could mention her in any of her jokes to which she replied, “‘Yeah, you can make fun of me. ‘Just don’t say that I’m a bitch and that you don’t like me.'”
John added, “I would never say that — not even as a joke — that my wife is a bitch and I don’t like her. That is not true. My wife is a bitch and I like her so much. She is a dynamite, 5-foot, Jewish bitch and she’s the best.”
February 2019
John put up a sweet Instagram post for Anna on the occasion of Valentine’s Day. “Happy Valentines Day to the coolest, kindest, funniest, weirdest, most beautiful, most artistically inspiring person I have ever met,” he wrote alongside a snap of Anna.
He further added, “Happy Valentines Day to a woman who is a cross between Joan Didion and Erika Jayne. Anna, you might as well be the Sea Org, because I’d sign a Billion Year Contract to be with you…Life would be so stupid without you.”
Later that month, John and Anna attended the 91st Annual Academy Awards together. We must say they looked gorgeous as ever.
December 2019
To celebrate the debut of John’s Netflix special, Mulaney and Tendler attended the premiere of ‘John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch’ in December of 2019.
At that point, John shared a photo from the event and a part of his caption read, “Anna, I don’t know how to pose in photos but I am lucky to be next to you. And you’re the only person I want to make laugh, truly.”
December 2020
The New York Post’s Page Six reported that John had checked into a rehab facility for 60 days. As per various reports, he checked into rehab for cocaine and alcohol abuse.
In the past, Mulaney had openly talked about how he started drinking at the young of 13 and later on began consuming drugs. He stated he became sober when he was 23 years old. He checked out of the facility in February and entered outpatient sober care.
May 2021
The pair pulled the plug on their relationship in May of 2021. At the time, Page Six confirmed that the two of them were headed in the direction of divorce. Then, his spokesperson told the media outlet, “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.”
A spokesperson for Anna also added and told Page Six, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage.” In the statement, she said she wishes “him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
Soon after, John moved on in his life with the Buddy Games actress Olivia Munn. The couple also shares a son named Malcolm. Mulaney and Anna’s divorce got finalized on January 6, 2022.
