HBO’s hit dark comedy series Barry is coming to an end. The upcoming fourth season of the Emmy-winning crime drama will be the last. The news does not come as a surprise, as many cast members had hinted that the series would be concluding soon.
Barry follows a former contract killer Barry Berkman who is trying to leave his past behind to become an actor. However, his criminal history keeps coming back to him. Along with the announcement of the show’s conclusion, HBO has also unveiled a teaser for the upcoming season.
Barry to End on HBO After Four Seasons
Announcing the development, Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of comedy at HBO/HBO Max, said, “After three masterful seasons of Barry, we are eager for viewers to see the powerful, complex, and hilarious conclusion to Barry Berkman’s story.”
“It has been a pleasure working with this immensely talented team including Bill Hader, Alec Berg, Aida Rodgers and the entire exceptional cast and crew,” she added. Creator and lead star Bill Hader also released a statement: “It’s been an amazing journey making this show, and it’s bittersweet that the story has come to its natural conclusion.”
Barry premiered on HBO in 2018, followed by its second season in 2019. However, the third season took three years to produce due to multiple delays owing to the pandemic. The season finally debuted in April last year and received rave reviews from critics and audiences.
Barry has proved to be an extremely successful show for HBO, earning 44 Emmy nominations, winning nine. All three seasons of the show were nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Show Creator Reveals the Reason Behind the Show’s End
Bill Hader recently opened up about his decision to conclude Barry after four seasons. He revealed, “It was very much in the writing and the storytelling. I mean, a lot of people after last season were like, Why are you doing another season? It should have just ended. But to me, there are still so many questions with the other characters, and with Barry.”
“What happens in Season 4 is structurally radical in some ways, but it made sense for what I think the characters needed to go through, and what I think the whole show is always kind of headed towards. You realize, well, we could pad a lot of stuff, and just make story. But if we’re going forward, it ends in Season 4,” he added.
Barry Season 4 Premieres in April
The fourth and final season of the show will begin airing on HBO on April 16, 2023. The eight-episode season will follow the consequences of Barry’s arrest. HBO has released the official teaser for the final season, which shows the former contract killer incarcerated. Watch the promo below.
The official description for the final season reads, “Cousineau is hailed as a hero as Barry’s arrest has shocking consequences. It’s all been leading up to this — the explosive and hilarious final chapter of Barry.”
Apart from Hader in the titular role, the show stars Henry Winkler as Gene Cousineau. Sarah Goldberg as Sally Reed, Stephen Root as Monroe Fuches, Anthony Carrigan as NoHo Hank, and Sarah Burns as Detective Mae Dunn.
