Bridgerton bagged worldwide fans since the first season debuted in 2020. Not just this, Bridgerton‘s Season 2 became the most-watched English-language television series on Netflix with 656.16 million hours viewed since its March 25, 2022 launch. The drama series is based on Julia Quinn’s novel set.
Bridgerton reflects the competitive world of Regency-era London’s ton, where debutants are presented at court. The diversity, family dynamics, gorgeous costumes, and excellent cinematography are what make this series so special. Every character in this series has a story to tell. Here are the top 8 characters from Bridgerton!
1. Lady Whistledown
Lady Whistledown (Nicola Coughlan) is like the wallflower that no one sees. And guess what? That’s her biggest strength. As Season 1 ended, no one, except for the viewers, knew that Lady Whistledown is none other than Penelope Featherington.
The girl with a beautiful heart and a dear friend to intelligent Elois Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) is looked down on by her own family. People treat her as if she doesn’t exist. But again, Pen knows her way to shake the whole ton.
Lady Whistledown’s personality as the gossip writer is very much different from her real self. She is mischievous, sassy and unafraid to stir things up as and when she likes. Moreover, she is always on Queen Charlotte’s (Golda Rosheuvel) mind, who carefully makes every move to avoid coming into the bad books of Lady Whistledown while she leaves no attempt to hunt her identity.
The gutsy columnist has all the secrets of the ton and she uses them to strategically make or break situations, for example, Colin and Marina’s courtship in Season 1 and Elois’s secret in Season 2. Her distinctive voice makes the series even more interesting.
2. Queen Charlotte
The role of quirky and bold Queen Charlotte is played by Goda Rosheuvel. Her character is so catching that the director is set to make a spin-off. Yes! Last year, an official announcement was made that the streaming giant is set to create a prequel based around Queen Charlotte’s marriage to King George, and this March, the full cast for this spinoff was assembled.
Queen Charlotte is humorous, her schemes to find the best match are undefeatable and her silent but potent machinations behind the scenes make the show so much better. She is a great tastemaker in London society, so good, that she can pick the incomparable of the season with a single look.
Her over-the-top outfits are something that is adored by viewers. The queen has her ruthless ways to keep people in their respective positions, but if you look at her closely, she is an adorable person.
Season 2 brought us closer to her character. In Season 2, the queen made every possible effort to track down her biggest critic. She even framed Eloise for writing gossip as Lady Featherington. Apart from this, her fond love for her husband is something to watch!
When we talk about Queen Charlotte, Brimsley’s (Hugh Sachs) name cannot be forgotten. He is the right hand of the Queen and is referred to as the “Queen’s gossip-mongering” secretary. The queen relies on him heavily.
3. Anthony Bridgerton
Anthony Bridgerton is the eldest son and has a strong character. Season 2 brings us closer to his real self. Viewers were able to break through this hard-shelled man as he meets Kate Sharma in Season 2.
In Season 1, Anthony was seen protecting his sister Daphne at every cost as he had some next-level ego issues with Simon. The two end up in a pointless duel too. Nevertheless, Daphne and Simon end up as a golden couple in Season 1.
Ironically, this hard-core Bridgerton who wanders here and there when it comes to women ends up falling in love with Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) while he is all set to marry her younger sister Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran).
The ego clashes between Kate and Anthony are worth watching. The romance continues to brew between the two – from their rivalry to Kate’s deadly accident, Anthony couldn’t forget Kate. The love story of these two is the most epic in this season.
Anthony’s whole journey of seeing his father die in front of his own eyes and then taking up the responsibility of a Viscount at a young is truly admirable. In Season 2, viewers can see him opening up to his own emotions. I just love Anthony’s character. What do you think?
4. Kathani aka Kate Sharma
Here is where my heart lies. Kate Sharma’s character is played by the gorgeous Simone Ashley. Kate appears in Bridgerton Season 2 alongside her mother Lady Mary Sharma and sister Edwina Sharma.
Kate’s purpose in life is to find happiness for the Sharma family and go back to India where she has the most cherished memories of her father. Her character has stolen the hearts of many.
Kate’s character is a strong portrayal of a young woman who spent most of her childhood in India and comes back to her roots in the most badass version of herself, and society can’t take it.
In times when the British ladies are not even allowed to write per their interests, the elder Sharma sister Kate is riding horses and hunting. The list of Kate’s sacrifices is endless. She fell in love when she least expected it. Yes, it is none other than Edwina’s prospective bridegroom Anthony Bridgerton.
Even though Kate comes back to get her sister Edwina’s match, she ends up falling for Anthony who was keen to marry Edwina. The romance continues to brew between the two – from their rivalry to Kate’s deadly accident, Anthony couldn’t forget Kate. The love story of these two is the most epic in this season.
4. Benedict Bridgerton
I don’t know why I like Benedict Bridgerton’s (Luke Thompson) character so much. Well, he’s got his charms. In the first season, Benedict had no responsibility because he is the second oldest.
Anthony had taken up all the burden and Season 2 helps us understand the situation closely. Benedict is the guy who has the support of his elder brother and well, all the Bridgertons. He is fun-loving and explores his identity through his fond love for art.
Benedict’s careless nature and love for finding happiness in small things keep the Bridgestone family sane amid all the scandals and troubles. In Season 2, Anthony gets him an art scholarship while Benedict thinks that he got it on his own. This breaks his heart and he is ready to give up what he loves the most. But again, isn’t he a great artist?
5. Lady Danbury
Lady Danbury has been the most epic character since the arrival of Season 1. Lady Danbury is considered the sharp-tongued, insightful doyenne of London society. She has a strong bond with the queen and somewhere, has been the backbone of the Bridgertons. From finding Daphne’s love to finding the spark between Kate and Anthony, she’s known for her brilliant sight.
In Season 2, Lady Danbury sponsors the Sharma family and convinces the queen that Edwina Sharma is her real diamond. Along with this, she is both formidable and a little scary. Her judgments may be sharp, but they are always accurate. She appeared in Season 1 as Simon’s late mother.
I like the way she arches her eyebrows when she sees a potential scandal brewing. Well, she knows everything about everyone and understands the ways of courtship. I don’t think Bridgerton can ever survive without Lady Danbury.
6. Eloise Bridgerton
Eloise Bridgerton is rebellious, funny, tenacious, intelligent, well-read, and knows her ways to get away from a marriage proposal. We can say Eloise is too modern for the customs of the Regency era.
Eloise is the fifth Bridgerton child and this character is played by Claudia Jessie. She is the true feminist of the series. She has a curious mind and has been trying to unmask the identity of the mysterious gossip columnist Lady Whistledown.
Little did she know that Lady Whistledown was always by her side in the form of her best friend. In Season 2, Eloise’s encounter with a working-class boy and gradually developing feelings have led to a new gateway of possibilities, keeping aside the traditional norms that follow in the society for finding a match.
The present Season has pulled her from her books and allowed her to showcase her radical side. I like Eloise because she is an observant young lady who never hesitates to question society’s expectations. Well, the reason why she gets along well with her brother Benedict.
7. Violet Bridgerton
Now, when we speak so highly about her children, Violet Bridgerton deserves all the credit for bringing them up so well. She is the mother we all want. The character is played by Ruth Gemmell.
She raised the majority of her children after her husband’s tragic death. She is known to enter into schemes with Lady Danbury to secure the best matches for her children, whether they appreciate it. Her kind temperament and understanding nature makes her the perfect mother in the series.
8. Theo, The Commoner
Bridgerton Season 2 added one of the finest characters to the series and we hope he continues to play his part. Theo is a printer’s apprentice at the printer shop that produces Lady Whistledown’s scandal sheet. Eloise like hanging out with him because of his liberal thoughts. And yea, there is some love brewing between the two.
Even though Bridgerton is set within the higher, aristocratic class, Theo has appeared as an alternate window to viewers. He is the commoner who doesn’t concern himself with the gossip of society. He has his things to focus on. Well, he is intelligent and knows about women’s rights even when the upper class fails to consider them. What do you think about these characters?
