Carole Ann Boone is not an ordinary woman. She not only fell In love with monster serial killer Ted Bundy but also had his child while he was serving his death sentence row.
Boone’s romantic adventure with Bundy started in the year 1974 for the first time after she had just divorced her second husband. The duo connected while she was working at the Department of Emergency Services in Olympia, Washington. Bundy was assisting the officers in carrying out search operations to locate many ladies whom he killed.
According to the book The Only Living Witness: The True Story of Serial Sex Killer Ted Bundy by authors Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth, Boone, who met Bundy during the period of her second divorce, was “a lusty-tempered free spirit”.
Boone said, “I guess I was closer to him than other people at the agency. I liked Ted immediately. We hit it off well.” She further added, “He struck me as a rather shy person with a lot more going on under the surface than what was on the surface.”
She was not aware that Bundy was already involved in gruesome crimes like kidnapping, raping, and murdering young ladies. During their relationship, his ex-girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer even though she felt suspicious about him, could not gather enough courage to report to the police.
Ted Bundy’s Persona
It might appear weird for people to be affectionate toward a serial killer like Ted Bundy, however, it is important to bear in mind his sociopathic charm. Bundy used to keep those ladies whom he did not kill at an arm’s length distance so that he can carry on with his nightly bloodlust and spend the daytime with women during work hours according to ati.
Elizabeth Kloepfer was in a relationship with him for approximately seven years and he in fact served as a de facto father figure to her daughter. Ladies used to feel that there was something meaningful and important about him.
Boone explained, “He certainly was more dignified and restrained than the more certifiable types around the office. He would participate in the silliness parkway. But remember, he was a Republican.”
Bundy was against the hippie and anti-Vietnam movements during that time and he looked as if he is socially conservative compared to his colleagues. Maybe because of this image Boone was attracted to him.
Arrest and Trial of Bundy
Bundy was first arrested by Police in 1975 in Utah when they found suspected items like pantyhose, a ski mask, handcuffs, etc in his Volkswagen Beetle car. He was finally convicted of the kidnap and assault of a 12-year-old girl.
However, this did not deter Boone and Bundy’s relationship and it grew stronger slowly and steadily. They used to exchange letters and Boone used to visit him daily. She was not yet married to Ted Bundy during that time but she was getting really close to him.
Bundy was extradited after two years to Colorado to complete his 15-year sentence. Bundy even tried to escape from prison with the help of money smuggled in by Boone.
He then fled to Florida and committed two heinous crimes. He murdered Chi Omega sorority girls Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy. He also kidnapped, assaulted, and murdered 12-year-old Kimberly Leach. Boone also relocated to Florida to participate in the trial where Bundy was acting as his own defense attorney.
Carole Ann Boone and Ted Bundy’s Relationship
Boone was very loyal to Ted. Boone said in an interview, “Let me put it this way, I don’t think that Ted belongs in jail. The things in Florida don’t concern me any more than the things out west do.”
She further said, “I don’t think they have reason to charge Ted Bundy with murder in either Leon County or Columbia County.”
She decided to relocate to Gainesville, about 40 miles from the prison as her conviction was very strong. She used to visit Ted along with his son Jayme every week.
During his trial, Bundy disclosed that his relationship with Boone had become a “more serious, romantic thing” in the recent past few years.
Michaud and Aynesworth wrote in their book: “They were crazy together. Carole loved him. She told him that she wanted a child and somehow they had sex in the prison. Touching was permitted, and from time to time, intercourse was possible behind a water cooler, in the restroom, or sometimes at the table.”
Even though this was not permitted inside prison technically, Boone elaborated that one of the security guards was very nice and he just ignored their activities.
In the Netflix series, Carole Ann Boone was heard saying, “After the first day they just, they didn’t care. They walked in on us a couple of times.”
Ann Rule, a former Seattle police officer who also wrote a book on Bundy (The Stranger Beside Me) described how bribing security guards was common at the jail so that visitors could get some personal time to spend with the prisoners.
It is even reported by a few media outlets that Boone would smuggle drugs inside the prison by hiding them in her skirt.
Bundy’s Marriage Proposal to Boone in Court
Bundy was already sentenced to death for the gruesome murders and was about to get convicted once again for the murder of Kimberly Leach. This trial did result in Bundy’s third death sentence.
Bundy then urged Carole Ann to marry him in the middle of his murder trial. She agreed to this. Bundy said, “I do hereby marry you” after which the duo officially united.

Where is Carole Ann Boone now?
Bundy’s execution happened on 24th Jan 1989 in Raiford electric chair. Three years before Ted Bundy’s execution Boone separated from him. After that, she reportedly did not see him ever again.
There is very little information available as to what exactly happened to Carole Ann Boone after that. It is believed that she relocated to another city then along with her two kids, Jayme and Rose. She used to stay away from the media glare and the public eye as much as possible.
Going by a few reports, Carole Ann Boone died in a Washington State retirement home in 2018.
