So, how did this monster die? Read on to know all about it.
America’s Most Horrific Serial Killer…
Jeffrey Dahmer, also known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” or the “Milwaukee Monster”, murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys from 1978-1991, many of them people of colour and some underage. Born in Milwaukee, Jeffrey was mostly neglected by his parents. However, no one knew that a timid boy would one day turn into a sex offender, cannibal and gruesome murderer.
From committing the first murder of a boy named Steven Hicks in 1978 to severing the head, arms and legs of his victims, Dahmer managed to hunt 17 young boys before he was finally arrested in July 1991. The authorities found gruesome details about his ways of killing, one being that he used to retain the victim’s head, boiled it in a mixture of Soilex and bleach it to retain the skull, and later use it for masturbation.
Following the documentary “Conversation With A Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes”, Netflix premiered a scripted drama series “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” yesterday (Sept. 21). Starring Evans Peters as Dahmer, the series explores this monster from the point of view of the victims who managed to survive his gruesome acts. Monster’s script is written by Murphy along with Ian Brennan (Glee, Scream Queens) and David McMillan (Lucifer, Sleepy Hollow).
Per the synopsis, the series also documents the “racist, systemic failures “that enabled one of America’s most notorious serial killers to continue his murderous spree in plain sight for over a decade.” After writing a detailed article on this monstrous serial killer, I managed to watch this series, which gives the viewers a closer look at otherwise unimaginable things.
Many people who haven’t seen this series, or haven’t read about Jeffrey Dahmer, do not know how this man managed to serve only three years in prison. Well, he was killed before he could serve the remainder of his term. So how did he die? Read on to learn all about his jail term.
How Did Jeffrey Dahmer Die?
Many of Jeffery’s later murders involved acts such as cannibalism, necrophilia and permanent preservation of body parts, typically all or part of the skeleton. Even though Jeffrey was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, psychotic disorder and schizotypal personality, the monster was found to be legally sane for trial.
When it comes to Jeffrey Dahmer’s case, one is bound to question the capability of law enforcement. Do you that Jeffrey was arrested in 1991 for the second time? Before that, the serial killer pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree sexual assault and enticing a child for immoral purposes. But again, his sentencing was suspended until a few months. During this period, he managed to kill his fifth victim, Anthony Spears, whom he met at a gay bar.
After his trial, Jeffrey Dahmer was convicted of “fifteen of the sixteen murders” in Wisconsin and was initially sentenced to fifteen terms of life imprisonment in 1992. While many were wanting a death sentence for him, his sentence was extended to sixteen terms of life imprisonment. But again, he managed to serve only three years in prison because he was killed in 1994.
When he was shifted to the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, Jeffrey Dahmer was killed inside the prison by a fellow inmate, Christopher Scarver, who beat him to death on November 28, 1994. On the said morning, he was found on the bathroom floor with extreme head wounds after being hit by a heavy metal bar. Even though Dahmer was alive during the time of this assault, he was declared dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital.
Why was Jeffrey Dahmer Killed?
If you’re not aware, Wisconsin abolished the death penalty in 1853 and this was the very reason, why Jeffrey managed to escape the death penalty despite the severity of his crimes. But again, many wished for his death. Despite spending his first year under protective isolation, Scarver, who was serving a 25-year-prison term, managed to kill him and take the honour, well that’s what the authorities felt.
It has been reported that authorities believed that killing Jeffrey would earn a convict “an honoured place in the prison world”. Before his murder, there was another attempt on his life in 1992, but it failed. Another reason for his death was that he was known for upsetting his fellow inmate. It has been reported that Christopher always used to keep a news clipping of Jeffrey’s cannibal crimes in his pocket.
Christopher, who killed Dahmer, revealed that he would often taunt his fellow inmates by creating horrific pictures. For instance, he would spread ketchup to look like blood and put it in a place where people would be. He even crossed lines with some of the inmates. In a previous interview, Christopher revealed his conversation with Jeffrey before killing him. Here is what he said:
“I asked him if he did those things ’cause I was fiercely disgusted. He was shocked. Yes, he was. He started looking for the door pretty quick. I blocked him. Two swings of the bar to Dahmer’s head were all it took. His skull was crushed and Dahmer was pronounced dead an hour after arriving at the hospital. He was 34. He ended up dead. I put his head down.”
One of the relatives of Jeffrey’s last victim revealed in an interview that she had anticipated her slaying in prison way back. She claimed to have received phone calls from men claiming to be prison inmates and promising her that he would be taken care of. Well, such was the end of this monster. Sometimes, justice is found beyond what’s written in law. What do you think?
