History Of Isekai

The concept of Isekai can be traced back to ancient Japanese literature. Namely the narrative of Urashima Tar. A fisherman who saves a turtle and is transported to a fantastic undersea kingdom. Urashima comes back to his home village after spending four or five days there, only to discover that he has been transported 300 years into the future.

In 1918, Seitaro Kitayama’s Urashima Tar transformed the folk tale into one of the earliest animation movies. Portal fantasy stories from English literature, such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) as well as Peter Pan (1904).
