Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie have pulled the plug on their marriage after 18 years together. On August 2, 2023, the couple took to social media to share with their fans all over the world that they had decided to part ways.
The statement put out on Justin’s official Instagram page reads, “Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.”
It further reads, “As always we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to built. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.”
A statement from the prime minister’s office revealed that both of them had signed a legal separation agreement. The statement read, “They remain a close family and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week.”
How did Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire meet?
Justin and Sophie met each other for the first time when they were kids. Back in the day, she was a classmate of his youngest brother Michael. During a 2005 interview with Maclean’s, she recalled that as a kid she would often play at Trudeau’s house and she stated that she always had a crush on him.
She told the media outlet, “They had a really cool pool with a trapeze and ropes and we could play Tarzan for hours. We would hide in the closets to have our first kiss.”
Later on down the lane, Trudeau and Gregoire reconnected again when they co-hosted a fundraising event in 2003. At that point in time, Justin wasn’t looking for anything serious. When Sophie sent an email to the future politician after the meeting, he didn’t respond.
He recalled, “I got the email, and I said, ‘Nice. Okay. Good.’ And I didn’t answer it. I didn’t delete it, I just decided, ‘No, I’m better off not starting anything that I’m not willing to go through with.’ ”
After a couple of weeks, Justin and Sophie ran into each other by chance and then he realized that he wanted to be with her. He emailed her that night and the pair went to an Afghan restaurant on their first date.

Trudeau and Sophie walked down the aisle in 2005. They exchanged their vows on May 28, 2005, in a traditional Catholic at Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church in Montreal. The pair shares three children: sons Xavier James and Hadrien Gregoire and daughter Ella-Grace.
