Early life and Sports
Elena Rybakina was born in the year 1999 in Moscow. She began her sports journey along with her older sister when she was very young. In her initial years, her focus was on gymnastics and ice skating.
Her dad advised focusing on tennis as she was too tall to become a professional in gymnastics or ice skating. Rybakina started playing tennis at the age of six.
She got training from former ace players like Andrey Chesnokov and Evgenia Kulikovskaya. She used to play tennis for almost two hours every day and train in fitness for three hours a day.
Professional Career
Rybakina started playing on the ITF Women’s Circuit in 2014 when she was just 15. She reached three ITF finals in singles and two in doubles.
After playing for more than four years, Rybakina started on the WTA Tour during the second half of the season. She made her Grand Slam debut in 2019 at the French Open as a qualifier, however, she lost to Kateřina Siniaková.
In 2020, Rybakina led the WTA Tour in the finals and tied for second in match wins. Just before the forced shut down of the WTA tour because of the Coronavirus pandemic she made it to the final of the Australian Open and the Qatar Open. She lost the match to world No. 1, Ashleigh Barty.
She has a career-high ranking of world No. 12 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). She is the current Kazakhstani female No. 1 player in singles. Rybakina has reached eight other finals on the WTA Tour, including three at the WTA 500 level, winning two titles.
